Selama ini saya menitikberatkan pada penelitian di Indonesia, terutama persoalan pariwisata masa lalu. Dalam kesempatan ini saya ingin melihat dari sudut pandang sebaliknya yaitu dari Belanda. Namun, tetap menggunakan metode sejarah. Relations between Indonesia and the Netherlands in the tourism sector has been established long time ago. The relation since the Netherlands as the mother country for the Dutch East Indies and the Dutch East Indies as a colony until Indonesia became an independent state. Relations in the tourism sector was disconnected in the early days of the Second World War until the 1950s. This article discuss the traces of the relationship and the contemporary situation of the tourism sector in both countries. The discussion focused on the Netherlands as a travel and holiday destination for the Dutch East Indies’ citizens when it called verlofgangers (those who furlough) and then for Indonesian tourists. The question is how the Netherlands to promote the country as well as the reason why they promote the country to Indies’ and Indonesian tourists. The sources used are Dutch’s newspapers and magazines during the period as well as Dutch contemporary newspapers, archives of tourism agencies in the Netherlands.
